Tourist Visa on Arrival (VOA) – required documents:

  • Passport with at least 6 months of residual validity from the date of entry and at least 2 blank pages.
  • One recent passport-sized photo.
  • Visa stamping fee to be paid by the traveler ($35 USD) for a single-entry visa.

In the afternoon, a visit is scheduled to the impressive Wat Visoun stupa, followed by the Wat Aham and Wat Mai temples. In the evening, enjoy free time to independently explore the Night Market, where you can browse a splendid selection of handcrafted textiles.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang was the capital of Lan Xang, the “Kingdom of a Million Elephants,” from the 14th to the 16th century. It enjoys a privileged location, surrounded by mountains and nestled between the Mekong and the Khan River. With its surrounding hills and its position on a peninsula of land between the two rivers, its imposing temples, and its multi-ethnic population, Luang Prabang offers a suggestive and harmonious atmosphere, making it one of the most pleasant and fascinating places in Laos.

Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel.

After breakfast, we visit the National Museum located in the former Royal Palace, which displays a beautiful collection of artifacts reflecting the richness of Laotian culture throughout the centuries. Discover why Luang Prabang is famous for more than just its golden temples. We will visit the oldest temple in the city, Wat Sene, and the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong; with its unique sweeping roof, it represents a prime example of classical Laotian architecture.

From there, we will embark on an upstream cruise on the Mekong River, offering panoramic views of the tranquil countryside. We will stop at the Pak Ou Caves, consisting of two large cavities carved into the limestone rock: the lower cave (Tham Ting) appears as a vast rocky opening protected by a white crenelated wall. A long, winding staircase leads to the upper cave (Tham Theung), located higher up. Inside the lower cave are thousands of Buddha statues left over the centuries by devotees as a sign of devotion—many of which, unfortunately, have been stolen and sold illegally.

The tour continues with visits to several local villages, including:

  • Ban Xang Hai, known for the production of traditional rice wine.
  • Ban Xiengmene, a peaceful village overlooking the river.
  • Ban Chan, famous for its handcrafted pottery.

Upon returning toward Luang Prabang, we stop at Ban Phanom, a village celebrated for hand-weaving. If time permits, we will also visit Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xieng Lek, small artisanal centers renowned for natural fiber processing and the production of traditional Saa paper.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

Day 3

Luang Prabang - Kuang Si Falls (B/-/-).

Optional Activity: Early in the morning, you have the opportunity to participate in the Tak Bat, the ancient Buddhist ritual of the morning alms-giving. During this ceremony, monks in saffron robes receive offerings (exclusively food) from the local population. It is a moment of profound spirituality, silence, and respect, representing the most authentic soul of Luang Prabang.

Breakfast at the hotel.

After breakfast, visit the Phousi Morning Market, where you can browse through dried buffalo skins, local teas, typical food products, and traditional tribal textiles. Laos is famous for its handicrafts: today you will have the opportunity to meet local ethnic communities in the villages of Ban Ouay (Hmong ethnicity), Ban Ou (Laoloum), Ban Thapene, and Khmu. This is an authentic chance to learn about the daily traditions of these fascinating peoples.

Continue toward the spectacular Kuang Si Falls, located about 37 km from Luang Prabang. We recommend following the unpaved trail that leads to the waterfall through lush nature and fairytale landscapes: limestone terraces, turquoise pools, and small cascades where it is also possible to go for a swim.

In the afternoon, visit the Ock Pop Tok artisanal workshop. Here you can sit and relax, admire the sunset over the Mekong, taste some typical Laotian dishes, and observe local artisans at work on traditional looms.

Return to Luang Prabang in the evening, with a stop at Wat Phabath to witness the sunset in an atmosphere of peace and contemplation.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

Day 4

Luang Prabang – Xieng Khouang - Plain of Jars (B/-/-).

Private car

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Xieng Khouang (approx. 300km ~ 6 hours), whose provincial capital is Phonsavan, sadly known for being devastated by American bombings. During the journey, do not miss the opportunity to admire authentic glimpses of daily life in Laos: you will encounter very few other travelers, only local inhabitants, who are just as curious as you are about the cultural exchange.

Upon arrival, visit the Plain of Jars, one of the most mysterious and fascinating archaeological sites in Laos. The plateau is scattered with over 2,000 stone jars of various shapes and sizes—some weighing up to 6 tons—whose origin and function remain shrouded in mystery. The site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, currently consists of three main areas accessible to the public:

  • Site 1, the largest, with about 250 jars;
  • Site 2, with over 100 jars in a quieter setting;
  • Site 3, also with more than 100 jars, located on a panoramic hill.

The remaining areas of the plain are not yet open to visitors, as they contain unexploded ordnance dating back to the wartime bombings.

If time permits, the exploration continues to the ancient capital Muang Khoun and some surrounding villages.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Xieng Khouang.

Day 5

Visit to the Central Market. Free time to explore the city before transferring to the airport for your flight to Vientiane. Upon arrival in Vientiane, you will be welcomed by your driver and guide and transferred to the hotel.

The tour continues with a visit to the impressive Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge and the Buddha Park, which houses a suggestive collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. A spectacular view of the Mekong River at sunset is the perfect way to conclude the day.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Vientiane.

Vientiane is a gem to be discovered slowly, best enjoyed by savoring the old district along the Mekong. The name should be pronounced Wieng Chan: in Lao, Wieng means “city” or “walled place,” while Chan corresponds to the Laotian pronunciation of the Sanskrit terms Chandana (sandalwood) or Chandra (moon).

Day 6

Vientiane - City Tour (B/-/-).

After breakfast, you will begin exploring the city’s main attractions, starting with Wat Si Saket. Located in the heart of Vientiane, it is the only temple to have survived the Siamese invasion of 1828 and is today considered the oldest temple in the city.

You will continue with a visit to Wat Ho Phra Keo, the former home of the famous Emerald Buddha statue, and the That Luang Stupa, the sacred symbol of Laos. You will also visit the Patuxay (the Laotian Arch of Triumph), also known as the “Victory Gate,” built in memory of those who died during the wars; today, it is one of the most important historical monuments in Vientiane.

In the afternoon, the day continues with visits to Wat Ong Teu, Wat Inpeng, and Wat Haisok. Return to the banks of the Mekong River in the late afternoon to admire the sunset.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Vientiane.

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer (without a guide) to the airport for your flight to Pakse.

Upon arrival in Pakse, you will be met by your driver and local guide for a visit to Wat Phou, a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple nestled among the rice paddies and waterways of southern Laos. The temple is built on three levels: the lower level focuses on the baray (water reservoir), the second level features quadrangular pavilions and sculpture galleries, and the upper level houses the sanctuary itself. Built by the rulers of the Khmer Empire before the construction of Angkor Wat, the temple served as the region’s most important economic and political center and remains one of the most revered temples for the Laotian people.

Afterward, we reach Don Khong, the largest island in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) area. Transfer to the hotel for check-in, followed by free time to discover this wonderful island.

Breakfast at the hotel.

The tour continues with a visit to the village of Ban Nakasang, where we will sail through the 4,000 Islands to reach Khone Island, an oasis of peace and tranquility immersed in wild nature. We will explore Khone Island by moto-taxi, discovering its rich natural landscape of rice paddies and coconut palms, as well as its colonial remains.

Next, we head to the Li Phi Falls, located west of Don Khone, very close to the Cambodian border. Their original name, Tad Somphamit, means “spirit trap,” and locals believe these falls act as a trap for evil spirits.

Afterward, we return to Ban Nakasang and continue toward Khone Phapheng, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Southeast Asia.

Return to the hotel. Meals on your own. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Don Khong is the largest of all the islands that make up the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) area and is also the island closest to Pakse. Although it is the largest in the archipelago, Don Khong measures only 18 kilometers in length and 8 kilometers in width. Numerous waterfalls are found in the area, which resemble rapids more than classic cascades; the main ones are those of Don Khone, Li Phi, and Khon Pa Soi.

Day 9

Departure for Tad Lo, crossing the Bolaven Plateau, a vast area in southern Laos stretching between the provinces of Champasak (Pakse) and Saravanh.

Situated at an average altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, the Bolaven Plateau is renowned for its coffee plantations, rivers, and numerous waterfalls. A journey through this region offers a refreshing break from the tropical heat and provides an opportunity to observe the cultivation of coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops. This stage of the trip is well off the beaten path, allowing you to discover some of the lesser-known areas of Laos.

Upon arrival at the Tad Lo Waterfall, you will visit the villages of the Alak, Nge, and Katu ethnic minority groups.

Return to Pakse in the late evening. Meals on your own and overnight stay in Pakse.
