Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival - Luang Prabang (-/-/-)

Hotel

Private car

The “Luang Prabang Highlights Tour – Authentic Laos” begins with your arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport and the completion of customs formalities to obtain your entry visa.

Tourist Visa on Arrival (VOA) – required documents:

  • Passport with at least 6 months of residual validity from the date of entry and at least 2 blank pages.
  • One recent passport-sized photo.
  • Visa stamping fee to be paid by the traveler ($35 USD) for a single-entry visa.

After baggage claim and the completion of bureaucratic procedures (approx. 1 hour), you will be welcomed by the driver and transferred to the hotel. Check-in and free time to relax.

In the afternoon, a visit is scheduled to the impressive Wat Visoun stupa, followed by the Wat Aham and Wat Mai temples. In the evening, enjoy free time to independently explore the Night Market, where you can browse a splendid selection of handcrafted textiles.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang was the capital of Lan Xang, the “Kingdom of a Million Elephants,” from the 14th to the 16th century. It is situated in a privileged location, surrounded by mountains and nestled between the Mekong and the Khan River. With its surrounding hills and its position on a peninsula of land between the two rivers, its imposing temples, and its multi-ethnic population, Luang Prabang offers a suggestive and harmonious atmosphere, making it one of the most pleasant and fascinating places in Laos.

Day 2

Luang Prabang – Elephant Trek (B/-/-)

Guide

Hotel

Local boat

Private car

Trekking

Walking

Breakfast at the hotel.

A day entirely dedicated to engaging activities, including a rafting tour and an exciting elephant excursion to and from the Tad Sae Waterfalls (with an alternative route provided during the dry season).

Pick-up at the hotel and transfer to the elephant camp. After crossing a small river, you will be introduced to some of our friendliest residents: the Asian elephants.

The elephant ride lasts approximately one to one and a half hours, traversing forests, plantations, and fields. The excursion concludes at the Tad Sae Waterfalls. (During the dry season, the trek ends on a trail within a village).

After visiting the falls, a packed lunch will be provided. This is followed by a relaxing rafting trip of about 30 minutes to return to the village.

Evening at your leisure. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

Day 3

Luang Prabang - Pak Ou Caves - Luang Prabang (B/-/-)

Hotel

Private car

Walking

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for a visit to the oldest temple in Luang Prabang, Wat Sene, followed by the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong, an authentic masterpiece of Laotian religious architecture.

Next, you will embark on a traditional junk for a pleasant cruise along the Mekong River, taking in the tranquil surrounding countryside and evocative natural landscapes. During the navigation, we will stop at the famous Pak Ou Caves, which consist of two large cavities carved into the limestone rock: the lower cave (Tham Ting) appears as a vast rocky opening protected by a white crenelated wall. A long, winding staircase leads to the upper cave (Tham Theung), located higher up. Inside the lower cave, you will find thousands of Buddha statues left over the centuries by devotees as a sign of devotion—many of which, unfortunately, have been stolen and sold illegally.

The tour continues with visits to several local villages, including:

  • Ban Xang Hai, known for the production of traditional rice wine (lao-lao).
  • Ban Xiengmene, a peaceful village overlooking the river.
  • Ban Chan, famous for its handcrafted pottery.

In the afternoon, visit the evocative Wat Longkhoun, an ancient royal temple that once served as a place of meditation for kings.

Upon returning to Luang Prabang, we stop at Ban Phanom, a village celebrated for its hand-weaving. If time permits, we will also visit Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xieng Lek, small artisanal centers renowned for natural fiber processing and the production of traditional Saa paper.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

.

Day 4

Luang Prabang – Morning Flight to Pakse – Khong Island (B/-/-).

Hotel

Private car

Walking

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer (without a guide) to the airport for your flight to Pakse.

Upon arrival in Pakse, you will be met by your driver and local guide for a visit to Wat Phou, a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple nestled among the rice paddies and waterways of southern Laos. The temple is built on three levels: the lower level centers around the baray (water reservoir), the second level features quadrangular pavilions and sculpture galleries, and the upper level houses the sanctuary itself. Built by the rulers of the Khmer Empire before the construction of Angkor Wat, the temple served as the region’s most important economic and political center and remains one of the most revered temples for the Laotian people.

Afterward, we reach Don Khong, the largest island in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) area. Transfer to the hotel for check-in, followed by free time to explore this wonderful island.

Meals on your own. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 5

Don Khong Island visit (B/-/-)

Guide

Hotel

Local boat

Private car

Walking

Breakfast at the hotel.

The tour continues with a visit to the village of Ban Nakasang, where we will sail through the 4,000 Islands to reach Khone Island, an oasis of peace and tranquility immersed in wild nature. We will explore Khone Island by moto-taxi, discovering its rich natural landscape of rice paddies, coconut palms, and colonial remains.

Next, we head to the Li Phi Falls, located west of Don Khone, very close to the Cambodian border. Their original name, Tad Somphamit, means “spirit trap,” and locals believe these falls act as a trap for evil spirits.

Afterward, we return to Ban Nakasang and continue toward Khone Phapheng, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Southeast Asia.

Return to the hotel. Meals on your own. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Don Khong is the largest of all the islands that make up the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) area and is also the island closest to Pakse. Although it is the largest in the archipelago, Don Khong measures only 18 kilometers in length and 8 kilometers in width. Numerous waterfalls are found in the area, which resemble rapids more than classic cascades; the main ones are those of Don Khone, Li Phi, and Khon Pa Soi.

Day 6

Don Khong Island - Tadlo – Pakse (B/-/-)

Guide

Hotel

Private car

Walking

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Tad Lo, crossing the Bolaven Plateau, a vast area in southern Laos stretching between the provinces of Champasak (Pakse) and Saravanh.

Situated at an average altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, the Bolaven Plateau is renowned for its coffee plantations, rivers, and numerous waterfalls. A journey through this region offers a refreshing break from the tropical heat and provides an opportunity to observe how coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops are cultivated. This stage is well off the beaten path, allowing you to discover some of the lesser-known areas of Laos.

Upon arrival at the Tad Lo Waterfall, you will visit the villages of the Alak, Nge, and Katu ethnic minority groups.

Return to Pakse in the late evening. Meals on your own and overnight stay in Pakse.

Day 7

Pakse - Departure (B/-/-)

Private car

Breakfast at the hotel.

Free time to explore the city at your leisure before transferring to the airport for your departure flight.

Exceptional experience with Amo Travel My 5 friends and I planned to go on vacation in Cambodia and Vietnam. Usually we organize everything ourselves but there a friend had advised us to go through a local travel agency (Amo Travel) to free us from all this burden. And we were not disappointed. A little last minute, Thuy, our contact person within the travel agency, took care of the whole trip organization a month before leaving. Activities, flights, transport, some meals, guides, everything was booked for us according to our criteria, and it has a price without competition if we had passed through a travel agency in Belgium.I can only warmly recommend going through amo travel for your vacation in Vietnam, which I have no doubt, will be as unforgettable as ours:) Thanks again to Thuy

All of our requests/queries were dealt with immediately and sympathetically as we did make some changes. Our travel consultant was Ngoc Anh - ask for her though I am sure the rest of the team are as good . I have no reservations about recommending them 100%

A Perfectly Organised Tailor-Made Journey in Laos and Thailand This was our second trip with Amo Travel , and just like the first one , which we took two years ago through Vietnam , Laos and Cambodia , this journey in Laos and Thailand was also tailor-made .We planned a 28 night itinerary with Mrs Huong , with whom we had a constant email exchange to put the trip together , alternating temple . visits, trekking, cycling excursions and boat tripsThroughout our email correspondence Houng was always very precise, helpful and extremely willing to make adjustments giving suggestions . After staying in Luang Prabang we went to Oudomaxay for a wonderful jungle trek in order to seer the last mountain ethnic groups . On our return to Luang Prabang we travelled up the Mekong river for two days on a traditional boat , stopping overnight in Pakbeng , before arriving in northern Thailand . There we alternate temple viists, trekking and cycling continuing on to Bangkok and the on to a stay in Phuket. The result was exactly the trip we wanted .The organisation was perfect. All accommodations were very good , some excellent and everywhere we found outstanding service and cleanliness and delicious food. The minibus used throughout the trip was very comfortable and always stocked with water . Everyone , from the drivers to the guides, was kind and helpful and always punctual. We also greatly appreciated Huang’s availability and the fact that she stayed in contact with us throughout the entire journey , always making us feel looked after. Our complete satisfaction leads us to highly recommend Amo travel and especially Mrs Huong who , moreover speaks excellent Italian Anna and Francesco from Italy

Amo Travel - you're go to local travel agency to visit Vietnam - highly recommended!! I have decided last minute to organise a trip to Vietnam and a friend recommended Amo Travel. I couldn't have found a better local travel agency. Thuan Nguyen assisted me in every step of the trip, she has been extremely professional, very responsive notwithstanding the different time zones, and was able to give me very valuables advices on the best places to visit. In an extremely short periodo of time she was able to book for me all accommodations, daily activities, transport (train as well as internal flights) in line with my budget and travel preferences. She was there, always available and supportive, during the entire two-weeks trip - I couldn't have asked for more!

perfection I have just returned from a trip to Vietnam organized by the agency Amotravel and I absolutely must leave a totally positive and enthusiastic review. The tour was planned a few months before leaving and the agency was always available and quick to fulfill all my requests as well as giving useful advice on what to expect from the trip.I was able to leave a deposit and settle on the spot the agreed price. As for the trip and the organization, I must emphasize that everything was perfect. We took a private tour and always had the Italian speaking guide and driver with us, and having made several stops between north, center and south, we changed many. And everyone was always very good, professional, punctual and helpful. The hotels chosen have always been impeccable, for cleanliness, location, and services. We were also able to change some trips planned the day before, and the agency even went to great lengths without us asking, to compensate for the new trip that maybe cost less than that choice, with dinners, and extra services....When we had some inquiries, on wattsup, the agency was always available and quick to respond...And finally the whole tour was splendid and expertly built by the agency: destinations, travel, stops for lunches and dinners,...I am sure I will return to Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia and will turn without a second thought to Amotravel which also deals with trips to Laos, Cambodia, and nearby areas.Thank you very much and for those who will read this review because they think to fly to Vietnam, I write in capitals: CONTACT AMOTRAVEL. STOP LOOKING FOR MORE. A 51-YEAR-OLD TRAVELLER WHO HAS MADE HUNDREDS OF TRIPS, MOSTLY ORGANIZED BY HIMSELF, BUT WHO HAS FOUND SOMEONE AS GOOD AS ME FOR VIETNAM, OR MAYBE MORE.Hello.
