Day 2

Siem Reap - Visit of the Angkor temples: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm (B/-/-).

Hotel

Tuk-tuk

Breakfast at the hotel.

Begin the excursion with a visit to the Angkor area, where we will spend an entire day exploring the wonderful ancient ruins such as the South Gate of Angkor Thom, famous for its series of colossal human faces carved in stone, the impressive Bayon Temple, the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the largest and most complete temple, Angkor Wat. This architectural masterpiece was built in the 12th century and covers an area of approximately 210 hectares.

Free lunch at a local restaurant.

You will stroll around this enormous building, admiring the many galleries with columns, libraries, pavilions, courtyards, and ponds filled with water that reflect the towering temple; the jungle-covered Ta Prohm temple is a sight of rare beauty. Enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers embracing the stone foundations of the structure give the impression that man’s creation is being reclaimed by the powerful forces of nature. In the late afternoon, you will have the opportunity to admire the sunset from Bakheng Hill. Free dinner at a local restaurant and overnight stay in Siem Reap.

Optional activity: A short Tuk Tuk ride and the opportunity to participate in a Buddhist ceremony where you will be blessed by monks wishing you happiness and prosperity for your holiday, with a surcharge of 10 USD per person.

Private car

Breakfast at the hotel.

During the morning, you will visit the Banteay Srei temple, which houses one of the most extraordinary jewels of Khmer art. Built in the 10th century, this small pink sandstone temple, whose name means “The Citadel of the Women,” contains sculptural masterpieces still in a good state of conservation. André Malraux made it famous in the early 20th century following the recovery of several “apsara” heads that were returned to the community in 1923. During the trip, you will visit the Banteay Samre temple where, according to legend, a farmer became King: the king of sweet cucumbers. You will admire the remarkable sculptures of this classic temple, preserved with great care. Free lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you will begin with a visit to the Preah Khan Temple, built by Jayavarman VII in 1191 in honor of his father, who is represented as the saving god of Mahayana Buddhism. The temple was originally a true city and a place dedicated to Buddhist studies. Belonging to the same era, Neak Pean, also called “Entwined Nagas,” is the only island-temple of Angkor. It is said to symbolically represent Anavatapta: the sacred and mythical lake of the Himalayas, revered in India for the healing properties of its waters. The large central basin is connected to 4 other smaller basins representing the four great rivers of the earth and the four cardinal points. Each of them has a gargoyle in the shape of a lion, horse, elephant, and man. The most interesting part is certainly a wonderful statue of Balaha, representing the legend of the rescue of a group of shipwrecked people. You will continue the visit of Angkor and depart to reach the two beautiful 12th-century temples of Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda, built under the reign of Suryavarman II. Here you will find sculptures in honor of Shiva, Vishnu, and the Devatas (particularly at Chau Say Tevoda).

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
